Black individuals HAD to sit at the back of the bus. The colored location was plainly marked to ensure that they understood their place. Nevertheless, it was enabled to have whites take a seat in the back area if there were no more seats up in front. If the seats were filled behind the marker and there were vacant seats in front, blacks were still not allowed to cross over to those seats (see image).
