A retrospective account of the research carried out in the 1950 s by the American Bar Foundation which conducted a pilot study of the processing of wrongdoers from arrest to prison– to observe what really occurred at each choice point, instead of assuming that doctrinal legal analyses sufficed. Much of the chief participants in the Study of Wrongdoer Justice write here about the effects of the earlier research for subsequent scholarship, mentor, and policy, and review the issue of discretion in criminal justice.
