Sanctuary for Families is New York’s leading provider and supporter for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and associated types of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers countless grownups and kids to move from worry and abuse to security and stability, changing lives through a detailed series of services. We offer a variety of wrap-around services to assist survivors restore their lives in the consequences of abuse, and work to end gender violence through 3 essential techniques: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are offered in 11 places throughout New York City.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Sanctuary for Families looks for a lawyer to offer legal representation and pro se support to survivors of domestic violence in household law matters in the Bronx, mainly in household offense, custody/visitation, child/spousal assistance, and matrimonial procedures. Other duties consist of performing neighborhood outreach and education in the Bronx, evaluating walk-in customers at the Bronx Family Justice Center, and teaming up with other companies to promote for systemic modification. The lawyer will work out of our Bronx Family Justice Center workplace. The position is presently hybrid and might be hybrid and/or go back to full-time in-office work. The lawyer will report to the Deputy Director of the Family Law Project at the Bronx Family Justice Center and the Director of the Family Law Project at the Bronx and Manhattan Family Justice Centers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides direct representation and advocacy to customers in household law lawsuits, consisting of household offense, custody and visitation, and kid and spousal assistance.
  • Maintains a caseload of around 20 – 30 active customers each month and around 40– 60 active cases.
  • Conducts outreach to underserved neighborhoods.
  • Trains law trainees, pro bono lawyers, social company, healthcare experts, and community-based companies on domestic violence and the legal requirements of victims.
  • Represents Sanctuary for Families on job forces and other policy and advocacy committees outside the company.
  • Recruits, monitors, and/or supplies co-counsel to pro bono lawyers on all elements of lawsuits in household law matters.
  • Supervises and coaches several volunteers and interns on all elements of customer contact, lawsuits assistance, case management, and/or task advancement.
  • Facilitates customers’ access to intra-agency and outdoors resources, and administers the arrangement of direct monetary support and contributions to customers.
  • Attends and takes part in interagency conferences and legal/ bar association committee conferences to keep up with advancements in the locations of pro bono, domestic violence, and legal treatments for victims of domestic violence.
  • Performs any other department or agency-related responsibilities or unique tasks as directed.
