A group of formerly incarcerated individuals in Kentucky, a state with among the most punitive legal systems in the nation, is rallying to see criminal justice reform in America’s damaged system.
In Kentucky and lots of other parts of the U.S., individuals who slip up at the age of 18 are branded as “bad guys” for the rest of their lives. Without the opportunity for a second opportunity, these individuals are losing the capability to actualize their potential.
Kentucky’s recidivism rate is 41% in the very first 2 years after being released. To turn the tide and see criminal justice reform in their state, the Smart Justice Advocates work together to prepare deals, consult with legislators, and supporter for the previously put behind bars.
With their special backgrounds and experiences, the Smart Justice Supporters wish to provide former prisoners a 2nd opportunity at success, and a collaboration with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is now assisting them make an even higher effect.
