Nov. 18, 2020: Conversations for an Engaged San Diego– The Rhetoric and Application of AI in Policing & Wrongdoer Justice

From facial recognition technologies to algorithmic sentencing guidelines to “predictive analytics,” courts and law enforcement agencies around the globe are spending large sums deploying advanced– and opaque– artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence tools with little training, transparency or oversight. But beyond the actual systems, courts and law enforcement deploy the rhetoric of data science to validate criminal detention and police actions.

The Pacific Leadership Fellows program welcomes two distinguished specialists on the law, civil liberties and AI to discuss the opportunities that brand-new technologies present in the criminal justice system while likewise highlighting the capacity for unintentional consequences, differential impact on communities of color and possible misuse and abuse.
