Crime Analyst

The Town of Cary is recruiting for a knowledgeable, thorough and adaptable Crime Analyst to join our OneCary team and share in our goal of creating the Local Government That Doesn’t Exist.

The Cary PD is nationally recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and partners with the community to provide exemplary policing to ensure that Cary remains one of the nation’s safest cities.

This position performs difficult administrative work completing statistical and geographic analysis of crimes for the Police Department under the general supervision of the Police Records Supervisor. The work requires considerable initiative, independent judgment, and discretion.

$51,064.00 – $79,144.00 Annually

Responsibilities:

  • Applies knowledge of criminal activities and law enforcement techniques into making analysis; considers geo-spatial and demographic factors into the analysis for compiling a data-driven approach to law enforcement activities; completes analysis for resource allocation;
  • Queries, transfers, manages, and analyzes RMS data using Central Square RMS and CAD system, on a daily basis in a variety of formats for distribution to officers and other departments;
  • Reviews reports daily in order to stay abreast of patterns and trends within the Town;
  • Queries RMS data for transfer into various software programs for further management of trends and series; Creates and maintains databases and creates customized reports;
  • Responds to requests for data analysis and information from command staff; questions staff about what the specific needs are and how the data will be applied;
  • Designs crime maps using the Town of Cary general GIS data layers as well as GIS crime data layers; Uses additional mapping layers to analyze the possible effects that other geographical factors may be having on crime trends;
  • Produces bulletins and reports in order to notify officers, investigators, and command staff of emerging trends and patterns to be used to guide tactical police activities;
  • Performs criminal intelligence analysis of major crimes; Performs specialized analysis for investigations and other specialty teams;

Qualifications:

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in criminal justice or related field with considerable experience working with crime and statistical analysis and GIS applications. Completion of crime analysis and GIS courses is preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years of experience of crime analysis or a closely related field at a law enforcement agency.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
