An account of the 19 th-century criminal justice system as an entire, from the criminal offenses devoted and the category of offenses to the various courts and their treatment. The author explains the phases of prosecution– committal, indictment, trial, decision and penalty– and the judges, attorneys and juries, highlighting the considerable modifications in the guidelines of proof throughout the century.

He takes a look at reform of the old system and evaluates how far it was caused by attorneys themselves and how far by external forces. He thinks about the fairness of the system, both as seen by contemporaries and in contemporary times.
