Job Summary

Peer Support Mentors are to provide Friends Care-based counseling, case management, skill building, crisis intervention, and transportation for individuals who are involved in the Henu’ Community Wellness Court, as well as six months post-placement support. These are year-long, non-benefited positions and show no wage increase in subsequent years.

Essential Functions

  • Supports and assists individuals in the recovery process through coaching, mentoring, and integrating with the community.
  • Identifies individuals’ abilities, strengths, and assets by assisting them to recognize these strengths and use them to achieve their goals.
  • Documents program information and other contacts.
  • Serves as an advocate for support of individuals.
  • Collaborates and cooperates with involved agencies, family members, and other supports.
  • Participates in meetings and provides relevant information as directed.
  • Utilizes community resources to promote community integration and individuals’ independence.
  • Assists individuals in articulating self-directed goals for recovery, helping to monitor progress in services, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on recovery experience.
  • Transports individuals in personal and/or company vehicle to treatment programs, employment, housing, Henu’ and/or other Court hearings, or scheduled appointments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Chemical Dependency Counselor.

Lifting Requirements

Sedentary work Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Qualifications

Education

  • No degree required.

Experience

  • Knowledge of or lived experience of the criminal justice system.

License/Certification

  • Complete and pass a peer specialist certification training program, including written examination, which is offered in accordance with the guidelines defined by the Department.
  • Alaska Driver’s License and good driving record, and access to a reliable vehicle to attend trainings, meetings, and/or transport individuals to appointments

Special Skills

  • Must have the ability to obtain clearances as defined by regulations
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to meet individual’s and program’s needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate cross cultural competency.

Preferred

  • Maintained within the last (3) years, at least 12 months of successful full-time or part-time paid or voluntary work experience.
