The Ottawa County Office of the Public Defender (OCPD) is looking for an intern who is interested in becoming an integral part of the trial lawyer team. Under the supervision of an Assistant Public Defender, the intern will gain practical experience as a student lawyer and investigator interacting with all components of the criminal justice system including “hands on” courtroom experience, one on one client contact, plus research and writing. Interns, under direct supervision of an experienced trial attorney, are able to appear on the record within the actual courtroom.
The internship will run from September-December for the Fall semester with the possibility of extending into the Winter/Spring semester. Individual schedule will be created with the intern depending on availability with school schedule and other commitments.
This is an unpaid internship working out of the Holland and Grand Haven Public Defender Office locations. Additional travel to other County and Court locations as needed.
Essential Job Functions
The OCPD student intern will have a unique opportunity to represent real clients. Student interns will:
- Interview, counsel, and represent indigent defendants.
- Engage in the practice of law under the supervision of experienced attorneys.
- Have an opportunity to appear in court.
- Work with a highly skilled group of attorneys who have been trained to be outstanding supervisors and mentors.
- Polish their public speaking skills.
- Work in a collegial, cooperative atmosphere with other students.
- Have an opportunity to apply the legal theories they have learned in the classroom in real cases with live clients.
- Engage in negotiations/conversations with prosecuting attorneys and judges in the community.
Required Education, Training and Experience
Applicants must be currently enrolled in law school. 2L or 3L preferred.
