JOB SUMMARY:
The Legal Advocate I is responsible for assisting survivors of human trafficking and sexual assault in obtaining protective orders and obtaining attorney assistance. Also acts as an advocate, providing peer counseling, advocacy, and accompaniment services when necessary, including, working with the Kings County District Attorney’s Office and Victim Witness Assistance Program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide short-term peer counseling to survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking as well as to family and friends of that individual.
- Complete temporary restraining orders for survivors of sexual assault.
- Provide crisis intervention services to sexual assault and human trafficking survivors as well as to family and friends of that individual, and including preparing protective orders.
- Answer and respond to incoming called regarding human trafficking and elder abuse.
- Document follow-up/advocacy/ accompaniment services provided to sexual assault and human trafficking survivors and their significant others.
- Responsible for referring individuals to appropriate community resources for additional assistance and counseling.
- Refer and advocate for client with appropriate social service agencies and/or in-house services.
- Interact with court personnel through in-person and telephone contact.
- Provide court support, i.e. provides general information regarding the criminal justice system, acts as court escorts and provides information on the status of the client’s case.
- Develop and update informational brochure on court procedures and community resources to distribute to clients and other social service agencies.
- Participate in the training of staff and volunteers on advocacy.
- Maintain records and files and complete necessary paperwork.
- Submit regular monthly reports.
- Attend all necessary meetings, conferences and workshops as required.
- Accept and inventory donations.
- Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as directed.
- Perform other responsibilities as needed or requested.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, e.g. Psychology, Sociology, or Social Services; AND
- Two or more years of work experience in crisis intervention, sexual assault, group, family or individual counseling.
OR
- Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, e.g. Psychology, Sociology, or Social Services; AND
- Four or more years of work experience in crisis intervention, sexual assault, group, family or individual counseling.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Travel and attend out of area meetings and conferences as required per the funding source(s).
- Work variable hours and days, including those outside regular Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours.
- Meet and maintain KCAO hiring requirements which include:
- Criminal Record Clearance including California DOJ, FBI and Child Abuse Centralized Index (CACI).
- Reliable, insured transportation and valid California Driver License.
- Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) acceptable to KCAO’s vehicle insurer.
- Health examination with tuberculin clearance.
- Ability to be contacted outside of regularly scheduled work hours in case of emergency.
