Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve, sociologist and award-winning author of the book, “Crook County: Racism and Injustice in America’s Largest Criminal Court,” hosts this Watson Faculty Research Series event with sociologist Jayanti Owens to discuss the school to prison pipeline, race and school discipline, and how policymakers can better impact change in these critical areas.

Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve (https://www.brown.edu/academics/race-ethnicity/about/people/postdoctoral-faculty-and-graduate-fellows) is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and a CSREA Faculty Fellow at Brown University, and an affiliated scholar with the American Bar Foundation in Chicago, IL.

In May 2020, Jayanti Owens (https://watson.brown.edu/research/2020/jayanti-owens-selected-2020-william-t-grant-scholar) was selected as a William T. Grant Scholar for her project, What Drives Racial/Ethnic Disparities in School Discipline? Understanding Mechanisms to Inform Policy Solutions. The grant will allow her to assist schools in developing and evaluating a diagnostic tool to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in student discipline.
