Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs plumbing related duties of considerable difficulty that may require a high degree of skill and technical knowledge. Employee may have to supervise other Trades Workers or SCDC Inmates involved in various types of plumbing repairs. Work will be in accordance with International Building Code requirements and DJJ Policy and Procedures. Responsibilities include general building maintenance and repairs as assigned. Participation in the Maintenance Department Emergency Call Back Roster as assigned. Directs helpers engaged in pipe cutting, preassembly or installation of plumbing systems or components. Installs, repairs and/or modifies plumbing systems to include new construction and remodeling. Detects and repairs leaks. Repairs or replaces valves, fittings, or pipe sections. Installs, maintains and repairs fixtures to include; lavatories, commodes, sinks, showers, etc. Repairs or replaces faulty sprinkler heads and lines. Remains abreast of new techniques, procedures and equipment in this area, recommends procurement. Installs gas and electric water heaters, ice machines, disposals, and kitchen equipment. Installation includes supports, hangers, or foundations as well as installation and service of storm drains and sewer lines. Monitors operation and preforms maintenance or sewer lift station, septic tanks, and grease traps. Services institutional grade dish washers, disposals, and laundry equipment. Provides technical expertise to Maintenance Manager and Physical Plant Manager in regards to plumbing related construction or renovation projects and information. May provide training to other Skilled Trades Workers in the performance of plumbing repairs and maintenance service as directed by supervisors or Physical Plant Manager. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: A high school diploma and experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air, water, gas or waste disposal systems. Relevant experience may be substituted for the required diploma on a year-for-year basis.

Agency Requirements: A high school diploma and Journey-level knowledge of the Plumbing Trade. Knowledge level can be demonstrated through licensure as a Plumber or Four years of practical experience as a Plumber or completion of a Trade School (Plumbing) and two or more years of related job experience. Employee must have and maintain a valid Drivers License. Relevant experience may be substituted for the required diploma on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to use all tools, equipment and materials associated with general building maintenance and repairs. Through knowledge of Plumbing systems, tools, components, and their repair procedures. Must be able to follow instruction, instruct others, direct and work with others. Employee must have and maintain valid drivers license. Employee is expected to exercise good judgement, accepted industry safety practices, and initiative. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs unassisted. Receives general supervision from the Facilities Maintenance Manager II and Maintenance Manager I. Employee must possess sufficient knowledge to make on-the-spot, independent judgements regarding Plumbing components, systems, and repairs. Employee will work independently and with others as needed. Employee will provide direction related to Plumbing repairs/systems. needed. Must be willing to work with SCDC Inmates and be willing to work at night or in inclement weather as needed. This position performs duties relating to the custody, control, transportation or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of SCDJJ; employee may have direct or indirect contact with incarcerated Youth. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
