Probation is an important part of the U.S. criminal justice system, and provides convicted offenders with a chance to avoid prison and go back to work. While on probation, individuals are subject to certain technical rules (such as avoiding alcohol and drugs), and breaking these rules can lead to incarceration. How effective is this system, and does it give rise to racial disparities?
