Job Description

Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with an emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.

ESH invites applications for the position of a Psychologist II / Psychology Associate II.

The incumbent will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing treatment to acute patients committed by the criminal courts. The dynamic work is centered on treatment of patients along a wide continuum of mental health issues and functioning levels, with varying criminal justice-involvement. The psychologist will provide competency restoration, behavioral interventions, individual therapy, facilitate psychotherapy groups fit toward their interests, and maintain treatment team responsibilities with an interdisciplinary team. There will also be opportunities to participate in program development for addressing a wide range of mental health issues for justice-involved patients and their treatment needs, to include milieu interventions, staff training, and group modules. In addition, we are happy to accommodate interests that may include community engagement and/ or public policy development, and research. The incumbent would be joining a strong team of collaborative psychologists within ESH.

This position is considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency, pandemic, or facility need. All ESH positions are required to work different shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays, and/or overtime as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology required.
  • Coordination of psychological services for each patient on caseload, knowledge, skills and abilities for the delivery of psychological practice and principles, knowledge of hospital/community/agency resources and ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Understanding of forensic populations, treatment needs, and assessment of this population, knowledge of how persons with mental illness encounter the legal and criminal justice systems.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in Virginia, or license eligible.
  • Doctoral Degree in Psychology preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor.
