As others have said, chevrons on the upper sleeve, above the elbow, indicate rank. Three chevrons are the most common, indicating a sergeant. Some agencies add a rocker, below the chevrons, to indicate a higher rank of sergeant, i.e. Sergeant II or staff sergeant. Two chevrons could be a corporal or a senior or lead police officer.
